In the 1930s and ’40s, Ball had seen her career flail at RKO Pictures. But the RKO studio lot was also where she met Desi Arnaz, when they co-starred in the 1940 musical Too Many Girls. Nearly 20 years later, when they were successful TV moguls, Ball and Arnaz bought the RKO lot, renamed it after their production company, and turned it into one of the premier TV studios in Hollywood. In a rare color photo from his 1958 spread on the launch of Desilu Studios, LIFE’s Leonard McCombe catches the couple (Desi looks apprehensive, Ball reassuring) as they ponder their risky new venture.
